Quit Smoking After 45 Years: What Made This Attempt Different

Woman celebrating her stop smoking success after help from Mindworks Hypnosis & NLP.Hi, Hypnosis Friends!

Another 5-star google review posted online for Mindworks!  Yay.  I’m happy to share the success of my recent client, Julia W.  After smoking on and off for 45 years, she wondered if quitting would ever truly stick. She had successfully quit before — even with hypnosis from other therapists — but found herself returning for a “booster” session within a month or so.  She kept going back to the habit.

Until she came to work with me.  My tool kit is different from other hypnotists–I offer expertise in NLP, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, combined with hypnotherapy.  NLP has been called “hypnosis on steroids.”   Julia had a session with me.  This time, she reports, something felt different from the beginning.

Now, six months later, she’s still smoke-free… and not struggling.

Six Months Smoke-Free Without Cravings

Here’s what she shared:

“Thanks to Connie, I haven’t smoked since August 13, 2025! I haven’t had a craving at all and don’t feel the need for a booster whatsoever.  I wish google had a checkbox for 10,000 stars!”
— Julia W., Centralia, WA

The full text of her review:

“I am 63 years old and have been smoking on and off for 45 years. The 1st time, I quit cold turkey. The 2nd and 3rd times, I quit via hypnotherapy with other therapists. Each initial hypnotherapy session worked like a charm! However, I found myself going back for a “booster” session within a couple months. Thanks to Connie, I haven’t smoked since August 13, 2025! I haven’t had a craving at all and don’t feel the need for a booster whatsoever. Beforehand, I thought I would certainly need more sessions… ya know, because I’m an old fart! NOPE! Not this time! The combination of NLP with Hypnosis has made such a real difference in my experience this time. After asking a series of questions, Connie customized each session to suit my specific needs. It’s been 6 months since I quit… Yaay! I will forever be grateful to Connie for all her expertise!  I wish google had a checkbox for 10,000 stars!” –Julia W. Centralia WA

That kind of outcome isn’t about luck. It’s about addressing the habit at the level where it actually lives.

Why “Boosters” Sometimes Happen (And That’s Not Failure)

Let’s normalize something important.

When someone quits smoking and later needs a reinforcement session, it doesn’t mean hypnosis “didn’t work.” Usually, it means the first change handled the surface behavior, but some deeper triggers — stress patterns, emotional associations, or identity habits — quietly stayed in place.

Think of it like pulling the visible weed while some of the root system is still underground. When life throws pressure your way, those roots can grow back.

That’s common. And it’s something we know how to handle.

What Made This Time Different

This time, we didn’t just aim for “stop smoking.” We built a fully customized plan using both hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), designed around her personal triggers, history, and patterns.

Instead of relying on generic scripts or willpower, we worked directly with:

  • automatic subconscious habit loops

  • emotional triggers tied to smoking

  • identity shifts (“smoker” → “non-smoker”)

  • confidence in handling future stress

  • installing calm, steady control as the default response

When hypnosis and NLP are combined this way, the goal isn’t simply to stop the behavior. The goal is to change the internal wiring that made the behavior feel necessary in the first place.

That’s why this time she didn’t report “holding on.”

She reported being done.

Common Questions About Hypnosis for Smoking

What does a session feel like?

Most people describe hypnosis as deeply relaxed but mentally aware — similar to being absorbed in a good movie or book. You’re not asleep, and you’re always in control. The work simply helps your mind accept new patterns more easily.

How many sessions does it take?

Many people succeed in one primary session, sometimes with a reinforcement session depending on history, stress level, or complexity of triggers. Each plan is individualized rather than one-size-fits-all.

What about cravings?

The goal isn’t to “fight” cravings. It’s to reduce or remove the internal drive that creates them. When the subconscious no longer sees smoking as useful, the urge often fades naturally instead of becoming a daily battle.

Ready to Quit Smoking for Good?

If you’ve tried quitting before — even successfully for a while — that doesn’t mean you can’t make it permanent. Often it simply means the right combination of personalization and method wasn’t in place yet.  I offer that!
