A lot of people have questions about NLP.\u00a0 “What’s THAT?”\u00a0 They come to me for hypnosis, but rarely have heard of NLP.\u00a0 Neuro-Linguistic Programming ™.\u00a0 It’s a “high tech hypnosis,” according to my teacher and the inventor of those three\u00a0letters, Dr. Richard Bandler.\u00a0 Michael and I are both Licensed Trainers of NLP, and it’s a part of everything I do hypnotically with clients in the same way\u00a0 that green is a part of grass.\u00a0 I don’t offer a brown, dried lawn, with some patches of green, maybe.\u00a0 My lawn is LUSH and alive and vibrant green.<\/p>\n

NLP, Neuro-Linguistic Programming ™ is a way of looking at the world.\u00a0 A very useful, empowering way.\u00a0 It’s about how people think, how the mind works, and how change happens.\u00a0 About the very experience of life.\u00a0 How we create our personal worlds.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And how we can easily create\u00a0new worlds for ourselves, to be more the way we want them and less the way we don’t want them to be–mentally, physically, behaviorally, emotionally, spiritually.\u00a0 I love NLP more than anything else I’ve ever learned in my life.<\/p>\n

NLP is based on our sensory experience of the world.\u00a0 We see through our eyes, and we also\u00a0create pictures in our mind’s eye.\u00a0 We hear through our ears, and we create sound bites and\u00a0audio loops\u00a0and\u00a0talk to ourselves in our mind’s ear.\u00a0 We\u00a0physically touch things with our fingers and bodies, a table, a piece of fabric, and experience smooth, rough, texture, warmth, and so on.\u00a0 And we create feelings inside ourselves.\u00a0 Love, joy, fear.\u00a0 We can stick something in our mouth and taste it, and we can remember and relive tastes in our memory.\u00a0 We can smell something under our nose, and we can re-create smells in our mind’s nose.<\/p>\n

My Nana made the BEST chocolate cake.\u00a0 I can taste it right now–in my imagination.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 And smell it.\u00a0 And see Nana’s kitchen, and her face and her voice while offering it to me,\u00a0and get a warm feeling of love from it.\u00a0 All at the same time.\u00a0 Memories are multi-sensual.<\/p>\n

Here’s the secret of life and what NLP has discovered:\u00a0 those representations\u00a0that we create in\u00a0our minds, the pictures, sounds we play, etc.\u00a0ARE our experience of life.\u00a0 They drive us.\u00a0 They are us.\u00a0 If we change the pictures and sounds, etc, we are changing our experience of life itself.\u00a0 We are changing our lives!\u00a0 Changing habits, thoughts, behaviors, bodies.\u00a0 And more!\u00a0 This idea creates an absolutely magical control that you can take over your life to get the life\u00a0you want.\u00a0 NLP does that!<\/p>\n

Regarding the multi-sensual nature of memory and experience, here’s how I describe some of my NLP work to clients.\u00a0 I say:\u00a0 imagine a cup filled with coffee.\u00a0 A nice ceramic Starbucks coffee cup.\u00a0 (I show them the very one sitting on my desk for ease of\u00a0illustration.)\u00a0 It’s got a handle.\u00a0 Yes, it does.\u00a0 You pick it up by the handle.\u00a0 You’re holding the cup.\u00a0 Now, imagine that cup has several handles, protruding in different directions all around the sides of the cup.\u00a0 You\u00a0could grab any of those handles.\u00a0 And you’ve still got a hold of the cup.\u00a0 You can raise it in the air.\u00a0 You can wave it around.\u00a0 You can drink from\u00a0it.\u00a0 (Yay!)\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

It doesn’t matter\u00a0which handle as they all are attached.\u00a0 Those handles are pieces of our representations of experience.\u00a0\u00a0 One handle is images in\u00a0the mind.\u00a0 One handle is sound bites.\u00a0 One handle is feelings.\u00a0 We have extra handles there for stuff we don’t even understand, yet.\u00a0 Like the 6th sense.\u00a0\u00a0 Or energy.\u00a0 There’s an awful lot going on in a moment of life and in a memory, some things we perceive, some we don’t,\u00a0but we are grabbing ahold of IT\u00a0by any handle.\u00a0 Grabbing ahold of life!<\/p>\n

If you come into my office wanting help with an irrational fear of spiders, for example, I may help you via helping you adjust pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes, smells.\u00a0 I’ll grab a handle of the problem.\u00a0 Maybe it’s a picture.\u00a0 And we’ve got the fear.\u00a0 And we can tweak it out of existence by tweaking the picture.\u00a0 Maybe in your mind’s eye a spider is 10 feet tall, and 3 inches from your face.\u00a0 (That would frighten anyone!)\u00a0 If we take that picture and shrink it down to tiny, and push it off into the distance,\u00a0the fear shrinks, too.\u00a0 We tweak the pictures\u00a0you make in your own brain, the sounds, the smells, and so on to help you re-create your experience of\u00a0life.\u00a0 Cool, huh?\u00a0 It works!!\u00a0\u00a0You can change\u00a0your world.\u00a0 Absolutely, positively magic.\u00a0 NLP.<\/p>\n
