A prospective client came in for her consultation yesterday. \u00a0In our Q&A, she asked me: “Are you going to give me an audio CD of our session that I have\u00a0to listen to?” \u00a0I said, “No way! \u00a0I don’t do that, because you\u00a0don’t need to do that.” \u00a0She heaved a giant sigh of relief, a prior hypnotist had tortured her in that way. \u00a0I explained more: \u00a0“When this work is done well, change is automated. \u00a0That means\u00a0it sticks and grows even more powerful on its own.\u00a0 Today, and tomorrow. \u00a0Without\u00a0you needing to listen to a CD.”<\/p>\n
The fact is, hypnosis is a self-regulated profession. \u00a0In the Seattle area, and in Washington State, there are no certification requirements, beyond a simple registration process.\u00a0 Anyone can do this work, trained or untrained, skilled or unskilled, creatively imaginative or reading from a script book. \u00a0Every hypnotist has chosen and pursued a different level of training, and has achieved a different skill set, as well as coming to the game with a different \u00a0level of native intelligence and creativity.<\/p>\n
Every hypnotist has a different mindset as well, as to the power of these tools for personal and positive change. \u00a0Some hypnotists are believers, and some are doubters.<\/p>\n
Doubters give CDs. \u00a0Giving a client a CD recording of the session gives its own NEGATIVE and damaging hypnotic message:\u00a0 our work isn’t enough to be successful.\u00a0 Wow, what a stupid thing to communicate\u00a0to a client–creating an expectation that change is difficult.\u00a0 Yes, our work is enough to be successful! \u00a0IF the skill set is there in the first place to create and install ongoing change rapidly.<\/p>\n
This work is all about utilizing the unconscious mind to make change.\u00a0 Unconscious means outside of conscious awareness.\u00a0 Thinking and remembering to make time to listen to an audio recording of your session involves your conscious mind.\u00a0 When the conscious mind is involved, this work is less powerful and less successful. \u00a0Good hypnosis requires no “homework.”<\/p>\n
A somewhat rude novice hypnotist asked me one day:\u00a0 “If you’re not going to make CDs, how are YOU going to compete?”\u00a0 The answer is (without giving away the unique processes I have created to help people change), by creating more success for clients WITHOUT\u00a0making them listen to a CD.\u00a0 It wouldn’t have been polite to say:\u00a0 “Because I’m better and smarter than you at this work and I’ve created something different that’s even more powerful.”<\/p>\n
Here’s a story I like to tell to illustrate these ideas from my own personal experience.\u00a0 I used to have an extreme spider phobia.\u00a0 In addition to being deathly afraid of spiders, I was constantly worried about seeing one and was always on the lookout.\u00a0 This pattern lasted in me for over 30 years!<\/p>\n
Guess what?\u00a0 I didn’t have to do anything or listen to a CD to keep that fear in place.\u00a0 It’s just who I was and how I responded in the world.\u00a0 It was an unconscious strategy in my mind.\u00a0 Not a useful one.\u00a0 With NLP, that strategy became changed in me in a one event new learning.\u00a0 I was changed.\u00a0 Effective immediately, there was no fear of spiders.\u00a0 It’s been 9 years now, and I’ve never had to “listen to a CD” to keep that change.\u00a0 It’s just who I am and how I respond in the world.\u00a0 With calm where fear used to be.\u00a0 That’s effective change.\u00a0 That’s what I strive for in my office.\u00a0 Automated change that does not involve your conscious mind expending energy where it’s not needed.<\/p>\n
So my advice, toss the session CDs and find a hypnotist actually skilled enough to help you face to face!<\/p>\n
