What Is Hypnosis? What Does It Feel Like?
Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention where the critical, analytical part of the mind relaxes, allowing the subconscious to become more receptive to helpful ideas and new patterns.
You already experience hypnosis every day.
-
When you’re absorbed in a great book
-
When you arrive home and don’t remember the drive
-
When you lose track of time watching a movie
-
When you’re drifting just before sleep or waking
That’s hypnosis.
It’s not sleep.
You’re not unconscious.
You’re actually more aware, not less.
What does it feel like?
For many people, light trance feels very much like normal waking awareness. Deeper trance often feels:
-
deeply relaxed
-
calm and peaceful
-
light or “floaty”
-
or pleasantly heavy and grounded
Either way, it feels good — and it’s safe.
Can Everyone Be Hypnotized?
Yes.
If you can focus, imagine, and follow simple instructions, you can enter hypnosis. In fact, intelligent, creative people often enter hypnosis more easily, not less.
The myth that only “weak-minded” people can be hypnotized is completely false.
Can I Lose Control or Get Stuck in Hypnosis?
No.
You cannot get stuck in hypnosis.
You cannot lose control.
You cannot be made to do anything against your values.
If a hypnotherapist stopped talking, you would simply emerge naturally within minutes — just like waking from a daydream.
Hypnosis is not mind control.
All hypnosis is really self-hypnosis.
Will I Tell Secrets or Reveal Private Information?
No.
Hypnosis is not a truth serum. You remain aware, in control, and able to speak — or not speak — just as you choose.
Your ethics, morals, and boundaries remain fully intact.
What Is the Difference Between Hypnosis and Meditation?
Meditation is a form of self-hypnosis aimed at quieting the mind.
Hypnotherapy uses the same focused state — strategically — to create specific outcomes such as:
-
confidence
-
habit change
-
motivation
-
performance enhancement
-
emotional freedom
Think of hypnosis as meditation with direction.
What Is the Subconscious Mind?
The subconscious mind is the part of you that:
-
stores habits, beliefs, and emotions
-
runs automatic behaviors
-
governs imagination, creativity, and intuition
-
controls involuntary processes like breathing and heartbeat
Your conscious mind is analytical and limited.
Your subconscious mind is powerful, fast, and expansive.
Hypnosis works by communicating directly with this deeper level of mind — where real change happens.
What Is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the guided use of hypnosis for therapeutic change.
Using language, imagery, stories, and NLP techniques, we work directly with your subconscious to:
-
release unwanted habits
-
build confidence and motivation
-
reduce stress and anxiety
-
shift limiting beliefs
-
improve performance and well-being
Hypnotherapy is often much faster than talk therapy because it works beneath conscious analysis.
Most goals are achieved in 2–4 sessions, though sometimes even one session is enough.
What Happens During a Hypnotherapy Session?
Every session is custom-designed.
We begin with a conversation to understand:
-
what you want to change
-
how the issue shows up in your life
-
what success will look and feel like
Then, you’re gently guided into a relaxed hypnotic state, where we use hypnosis and NLP techniques tailored specifically to you.
This is a collaboration — not a script, not “cookie-cutter.”
What Is NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)?
NLP is the study of how thoughts, language, emotions, and behavior create results.
It’s often described as:
-
“the art and science of excellence”
-
“hypnosis with eyes open”
-
accelerated learning for the mind
NLP allows us to:
-
design new emotional responses
-
install confidence and motivation
-
change habits and beliefs quickly
-
generalize success across areas of life
As a Licensed Trainer of NLP®, I blend NLP with hypnosis to create powerful, lasting change.
What Can Hypnosis Help With?
If the mind is involved, hypnosis can help.
Common areas include:
-
anxiety and stress
-
confidence and self-esteem
-
smoking cessation
-
weight management
-
sleep improvement
-
phobias and fears
-
public speaking and performance
-
sports enhancement
-
motivation and focus
-
pain management
And much more.
How Is Hypnosis Different from Counseling or Medication?
Traditional therapy works through the conscious mind.
Hypnosis and NLP work directly with the subconscious, where habits and emotional patterns live.
This often means:
-
faster results
-
less analysis
-
no “homework”
-
changes that feel natural and automatic
Do You Use Recordings or CDs?
No.
Our sessions are live, interactive, and custom-crafted.
We provide clients with tools, techniques, anchors, and self-hypnosis skills so change continues naturally — without recordings.
Do You Offer Phone or Zoom Sessions?
Yes.
We work with clients locally and worldwide via phone or Zoom. Hypnosis works just as effectively at a distance.

Final Thought
Hypnosis isn’t about control.
It’s about unlocking the natural power of your mind.
When you think differently, you feel differently.
When you feel differently, you act differently.
And that’s how life changes.
Warm regards,
Connie Brannan, CHt.
