What is Hypnosis?

Mindworks Hypnosis & NLP Offers Private Hypnotherapy Sessions in Bellevue, WA.

Discover the Power of Mind!

Hi, Hypnosis Friends!

This work is so “old hat” to me that I sometimes forget it’s a new adventure for a lot of people.  And they may not be sure what it is, confused by media misrepresentations of hypnosis.  So, once again, I’d like to explain this cool, accelerated learning state.

So much info is on my Mindworks Hypnosis & NLP website proper, and especially, on my frequently asked questions page.  Here’s another iteration of what I know to be true about this beautiful, powerful thing called hypnosis. Hypnosis is my passion, it’s the most wonderful thing I’ve encountered in my life!

What is hypnosis?  It’s a very pleasant and relaxing experience, it’s a calm and a centered kind of clarity of mind. You’re not asleep and you’re not zonked out, you’re in full control. You’re aware. It’s a kind of hyper awareness, which is inner focused.

What happens in hypnotherapy is that a person connects to their creative mind, their problem-solving mind, their intuitive mind and through creative language, stories, imagery, ideas, and “suggestions,” we direct that mind to desired goals and to create new internal strategies. I believe that people are massively powerful and resourceful in hypnosis. It is very much an accelerated learning state.

Hypnosis is an everyday naturally occurring thing, we slip in and out of this state all the time. My mother was an artist. While she’d be painting at her easel, THAT’s hypnosis. Reading a book, losing yourself in thought, that’s hypnosis. Daydreaming. Going to a movie! Filmmakers are master hypnotists! The experience of being in a movie theater and
caught up in a story (forgetting momentarily about the crunching of popcorn sounds around you and the sticky floors), THAT’s hypnosis.

It’s a narrowing of focus, it’s a suspension of disbelief. In hypnosis, we let the conscious, analytical, critical mind take a mini vacation, and that opens up a doorway to communication with the deeper (more powerful) part of our mind.  The part of us that runs the habits and patterns of behavior and responses.

My clients come out of hypnosis and they say: “Wow! That was amazing.”  Yes, it is.

Learn more anytime on my website.  I have many videos where I talk about “What is hypnosis?” as well.  If you’re interested in private hypnotherapy sessions, I also offer a free in person consultation where I explain much more.  I invite you to take advantage of that!

What is Hypnosis? — Tonight’s Webinar Answer by Connie

Connie Brannan, CHt.Transcript/excerpt of Connie Brannan answering a question: “What is Hypnosis” for webinar “Discover the Magic of Hypnosis.” broadcast June 30, 2015.

“Hi, Connie again! And now we’re going to have a brief conversation about what is hypnosis. We are assuming that you are a newcomer to this beautiful, magical, creative process called hypnosis. So, we’re going to take it from square one.

What is hypnosis? We have in our minds a conscious awareness. Awake. Aware. Living our life in the world. What we think. Logic. Reason. Evaluation. Focus. This is a conscious thing, we notice what’s around us. We notice what we can notice, and guess what? It’s a tiny, tiny bit of available information. We can only notice so much.

Hypnosis is an accessing of a different kind of consciousness, a resourceful, creative consciousness! Unconsciousness, which is also called subconscious. What it is: it’s everything else beyond that conscious awareness. You might notice one thing, two things, three things, in a moment. Your unconscious is taking in billions of pieces of information.

It is handling the processes of language. Translation. Understanding sound. The ability to speak and communicate. How to move your mouth. How to form words. Understanding. You don’t have to think about that. It has become automated, unconscious.

Unconscious mind stores your life experience in memory. It’s not a conscious memory, it’s an unconscious memory. It’s total recall. Holographic life experience. The definition of hypnosis: we get the conscious mind to step aside. Get out of our way! You’ve had your shot to solve this thing, now, step aside! When the conscious mind steps aside, it opens up a doorway into this creative, unconscious mind.

Here are some of the aspects of the conscious mind vs. the unconscious mind. Your conscious mind is analytical. Logical. Sequential. One thing at a time. Very, very limited in its focus. And it directs our day to day outcomes. Whereas, the unconscious mind is creative, unlimited and expansive. It is doing so many things, multi-functioning! It handles our feelings, our imagination. Our intuition. Our creativity. Our problem-solving ability.

And in addition to that, it’s running the body. Everything to do with the body and how it functions. Breathing and blood flow! So, now, I’m sitting here and I’m breathing. I wasn’t thinking about breathing a moment ago. And yet, it’s still happening. If I want to, I can consciously adjust my breathing. This is an example. I can breathe faster. I can breathe slower. I can breathe deeper. But if I forget all about it and stop directing it, guess what? I’m still breathing.

Unconscious mind handles digestion, and breathing, and blow flow, and healing and every process inside the body. Renewal of cells. All these things. These are unconscious processes handled by this fabulous, powerful unconscious mind. Gee! What a good thing to have on our side, huh? Talking to the unconscious mind about the things we want. That’s basically hypnosis.

You know, we talk about left brain, right brain. It’s really one mind, and it has different functions. My favorite, obviously, is your creative mind, your artistic mind. Some people say: “What’s more important, creativity or knowledge?” I believe creativity! As well as imagination. Maybe those words are synonymous.

Here’s an image and you can see:

Mind Functions and Hypnosis
Thinking, reason, linear, analytic logic. Science is on that left side there. Science, medicine, therapies that think “one size fits all,” one problem one solution. That’s not the kind of thinking that we use in hypnosis. Heck, no!

What we know in hypnosis to be true is that everyone is unique. And everybody has the ability, inside their unconscious mind to create a new world. The one they want! The one that’s joy-filled, and successful, and happy, and free, and fun, and all the things people want for themselves. It’s really accessible through this part of our mind.

So, what is hypnosis? There’s lots and lots of different definitions out there. The formal analytical one is: “It’s a bypassing of your critical factor, the conscious mind.” When you bypass, you push it aside, you go around it, you get in that door, you’re talking to the unconscious. That’s unconscious communication. That’s hypnosis!

My own definition: it’s a state of accelerated learning. Because, in this place in your mind you can make changes so fast. You can have new thoughts, new intuitions, new solutions to life’s dilemmas. And it happens at such an incredibly accelerated rate of speed. Unlike other therapies that might say to a person: “It will take months and months of hard work to make a change. Change is struggle. Change is horrendously difficult.” Well, that’s not what we believe in the world of hypnosis. We believe change is easy. And once you get into this state of mind, you have that accelerated learning available to you.

“What is hypnosis?” It’s a focused attention. It’s not sleep. Here we have an interesting word: monoideism. Focusing on a single idea. That is a good definition. However, that name itself just doesn’t sound sexy or anything. It never caught on.

We use the word “hypnosis,” Greek for “sleep.” That’s a huge myth, hypnosis is not sleep. Not in any way, shape, or form. It is a creative mind space.”

Your Brain Before Sleep — That’s Hypnosis, Seattle!

I found this pic on Social Media today.  This cartoon talks about “forgetting,” and I believe that idea as presented is not the whole story.   There is no forgetting.  Let me tell you more about the unconscious mind, how it works, and the power of unconscious ideas to actually “do change.”  I’m going to share what I know to be true with you, Seattle, about hypnosis, my passion!

Even if the conscious (thinking, awake) mind doesn’t remember these “amazing ideas,”  the ideas are still in THERE, and working inside the unconscious (creative, intuitive, power) mind.  They’re active.  They’re not “lost.”  They are beyond conscious awareness, and that’s where they are most potent and useful.  Unconscious ideas move us, to be and do different actions in the world.

This should not be an “Oh, well, disappointment” cartoon, it should be a “Hell, yes, and YAY!!!! Isn’t that terrific?” cartoon.  And when the unconscious mind thinks it is useful, you DO remember consciously.

Here is more information about hypnosis, Seattle!  Yes, those moments before sleep are a hypnotic state of mind.  Myriads of tests have been done to understand and label brainwave patterns, and those moments before sleep are an identical brainwave pattern to hypnosis, called Theta waves.  Every night as you’re falling asleep, you pass through hypnosis.  And every morning when you awake from sleep,  you pass through hypnosis.  This is not some otherworldly unknown, this is our life.  Hypnosis is natural, and we do it everyday.

Here, I have a chart of brainwave patterns, and explanation.  The hypnotic state of mind is between analytical, conscious thinking (Beta) and deep unconscious sleep (Delta).  It’s a natural state in which we drift in and out of throughout each day.

Brainwaves

Those creative thoughts, keep them coming, brain. Consciously or unconsciously.  Those moments before sleep are a power state of mind, and the unconscious will take those creative ideas and fly with them and create changes in the life that are wonderful. Who cares what the conscious mind remembers?

Here’s to your positive changes, Seattle!

Warm Regards,
Connie

Stop Hiding the Hypnosis!

Hiding the truth about hypnosis!

Hi, Hypnosis Friends and Enthusiasts!

Hypnosis is a larger field of study and practice than what is generally known.  It’s being used all over the place, and not by “hypnotists.”  There’s more to it, than the world commonly acknowledges.  You know why that is?  People hide the fact that what they’re teaching and doing IS hypnosis.

The word hypnosis has a negative, perjorative, fear-infused connotation in some people’s minds.  Unfortunate, and absolutely ridiculous!  And that generates fear, and hiding on the part of hypnosis sellers.  There are teachers and change workers creating fancy new words and titles and acronyms for the work they are doing.  Hey, buddy ….pssst.  Some of us do know.  It’s all hypnosis.

I attended a training last year on enhanced reading and rapid absorption of information that was absolutely, 100% hypnosis.  They never used the word, in their literature, in their marketing, or in the course itself.  They called it something else, which they had created to hide the fact that it is hypnosis.  They even hawked self-hypnosis CDs which they also called something else.  I asked the instructor:  “Why don’t you call this what it really is?”  He never responded.

I don’t hide my hypnosis.  I am PROUD to be a hypnotist.  I’d rather change the misconceptions in the world rather than try to camoflauge what I do.

What is hypnosis?  It’s communication on deeper levels within our own brain, it’s a doorway to resourcefulness.  To creativity.  To power.  It’s 100% organic and natural, it’s amazing, and lovely, and pure positive goodness.

I wish these practitioners of hypnosis who sell it as something else just in order to get more students and to make more money would stop that.  You’re helping to keep the ridiculous myths alive.  How will the understanding of hypnosis in the world change for the better if you continue to hide it’s power and success?

Stop hiding the hypnosis!

Warm Regards,
Connie (Hypnotist, and proud of that!)

What is the Unconscious Mind?

Hi, Hypno-Friends!

Your conscious mind is your thinking mind, your awareness of the moment.  It’s reason.  It’s rationality.  It’s logic.  We love our conscious minds, and in our culture we worship our conscious minds.  If only I could think clearly enough through a problem, that would change everything.  WRONG.  Thinking is only about 2% of your brain power.  It’s limited!

You’ve got more going on for you than you know!  You’ve got an unconscious mind.  That’s 98% of your brain function.  It takes in billions of pieces of information from your environment in any given moment, and processes it all for you.  (Your conscious mind can only handle about 7-9 pieces of information in any given moment.)  It’s running your body, breathing, blood flow, healing, growth, digestion, etc.  It’s storing your life learning– understanding language and the ability to speak (you don’t think about the mechanics of speech once you’ve learned how), skills such as walking (you had to learn this), riding a bike, driving a car, typing.  These and myriads more processes and skills become automatic and outside of conscious thought — moving into the realm of unconscious competence.

Your unconsious mind is power.  It’s your intution.  Your problem solving creativity.  It’s resourceful, beyond thought.  It’s limit-less!  Hypnosis is the act of tapping into your unconscious mind.  Hypnotherapy is directing that power to the attainment of specific goals.

Here in this video, which is also on my main web page, I explain this power differential.  Watch!  🙂

Warm Regards,
Connie

More Truth About Hypnosis – Is it Sleep?

Hi, Guys!  Here is more truth about hypnosis. It’s NOT sleep. You may snore in hypnosis, you may drool, your body may be massively relaxed, but it’s not sleep. It’s a different state of mind/body, with different brainwave patterns. You go into hypnosis every day of your life, including on your way into and out of sleep.
